Minister's cheer for Barry

A meeting with Health Minister Rosie Winterton was "very constructive" according to local tranquilliser campaigner Barry Haslam.

He spent an hour with the Minister at the Department of Health in London on Tuesday, outlining the problems of benzodiazepine addiction and lack of help for withdrawal and treatment.

The Minister also met Professor Heather Ashton, of Newcastle University, who said there were still one million long-term, prescribed benzodiazepine users in the UK.

She recommended issuing repeat guidelines on tranquilliser prescription to health professionals, plus withdrawal advice.

She also asked for finance for health workers to support patients on withdrawal at GPs surgeries, and for Government funds for support groups such as Tranx, based in Oldham.

Department of Health Submission, Professor C H Ashton, October 14, 2003.
