DAVIES IN EU DRUG APPEAL

THE European Commission should protect citizens across the EU from addiction to benzodiazepine drugs, according to a local Euro-MP.
Liberal Democrat Chris Davies raised the issue during a three-hour question and answer session in the European Parliament.
Mr Davies told Androula Vassiliou, the Commissioner for Public Health: "Benzodiazepines are prescription drugs, and very effective anti-depressants, but very addictive.
"Hundreds of thousands of people are said to have suffered ill effects as a result of addiction, with a number of suicides.
"What steps can the commission take to do something to protect citizens?"
Mrs Vassiliou said she planned to be very involved in getting more information to patients, and added: "At the moment we are studying the various questions of proper labelling and proper information."
