APPG for Involuntary Tranquilliser Addiction
Newsletter 3, October 24, 2008
Brian Iddon MP’s APPG on Drug Misuse held an evidence session in June 2008 at the House of Commons. The following people gave evidence on Tranquillisers:
- Professor Heather Ashton
- Barry Haslam
- Pam Armstrong
- Una Corbett
- Milly Kieve
- Michael Behan
- Allan Weatherburn
The Drug Misuse APPG is planning to publish its report in November. BBC West reported the inquiry and Kerry McCarthy, a Bristol Labour MP, was interviewed by the BBC.
Barry Haslam has conducted a survey of PCTs in the North West on the provision of services for tranquilliser withdrawal.
We have re-applied for the Parliamentary Exhibition Ballot, having been unsuccessful in the last Ballot.
We have written to James Purnell and David Freud at the DWP regarding the co-relation between addiction to prescribed drugs and Disability Benefit.
The AGM of the APPG is to be held in November.
The APPG obtained from Hansard copies of numerous Parliamentary Questions asked by the Health Minister Dawn Primarolo MP between 1989 and 1994. The questions show her interest and knowledge of the subject whilst in opposition. These questions and answers are available on Ray Nimmo’s website benzo.org.uk.
Also on the website are Early Day Motions and Parliamentary Questions submitted by Jim Dobbin.
Ray Nimmo has provided the APPG with its own page on the benzo.org.uk website.
We have invited Ann Keen MP, Minister for Health, to visit the Oldham Tranquilliser Withdrawal Clinic.
